The Hawkeyes struggled at the plate in their 9-3 loss. The team is now 13-13-1 on the season.

“Baseball is a funny game,” Hamilton coach Josh Hoppe said. “On Saturday we crushed the ball. Today, we struggled mightily.”

Hamilton was down 5-3 entering the seventh inning, but the Squires pushed across four runs in the frame to put the game out of reach.

Sean Thompson took the loss. He pitched five innings, gave up three hits, walked seven and fanned two. Tom Schreur and Scott Arndt combined to finish the game.

Thompson collected three hits. Also adding base hits for Hamilton were Arndt, Michael TenCate, Cole Carlson and Trenton Haverdink.

The Hawkeyes will finish their season with a doubleheader Wednesday against Holland. First pitch is slated for 4:15 p.m.

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — After rain canceled their home tournament two weekends ago, the freshmen were eager to participate in Saturday’s Grand Haven tournament.

The Hawkeyes responded with arguably their best two games of the season, but the team came up just short in the tournament championship.

In the opening round, Hamilton defeated familiar-foe Grand Rapids Christian 13-4. The freshman then fell 7-4 to host Grand Haven in the championship game. The team is now 13-12-1 on the season.

“I’m very, very proud of the way our kids played today,” Hamilton coach Josh Hoppe said. “We played great baseball all day, and had a lot of fun doing so. We just had one bad inning that caused us some trouble against Grand Haven.”

GAME ONE – Hamilton 13, Grand Rapids Christian 4

The pitching performance of Ethan Buresh and the blistering hot bats were the stories of the opening round game.

Buresh pitched all seven innings to earn the win. He threw 104 pitches and scattered eight hits. He fanned seven and walked two.

The Hawkeyes provided more than enough offense for their righthander.

Pacing the Hawkeyes was third basemen Tom Schreur, who went 3 for 3 with two doubles and a two-run home run to deep left center, his second of the season. Schreur had three RBIs, scored three runs, and was also intentionally walked.

“Offensively, we hit the ball all over the field today,” Hoppe said. “It’s great to see the guys making this type of progress toward the end of the season.”

Catcher Trenton Haverdink posted a two-hit, two-RBI performance. Cameron Stoel and Buresh each had two hits. Nick Kronemeyer had two hits and two RBIs.

GAME TWO – Grand Haven 7, Hamilton 4

The championship game proved to be a grind-it-out affair. With exception to a four-run fourth inning for Grand Haven, runs were few and far between.

Hamilton was unable to match their offensive output of game one against the Buccaneers. Still, good pitching and solid defense kept the Hawkeyes on the doorstep all game.

Kronemeyer took the loss. He pitched four innings and was tagged for six of Grand Haven’s seven runs. He struck out five and surrendered only five hits, but eight walks helped fuel the Buccaneer offense.

Kronemeyer was relieved by Schreur, who finished the game while holding Grand Haven to only one more run.

“Nick pitched well today,” Hoppe said. “He struggled a bit with control at times, but he held it down and battled through adversity. We just couldn’t get him enough runs to bring home the victory.”

Sean Thompson led the Hawkeyes with his 3 for 3 performance. Stoel was 2 for 2 with a double, and Kronemeyer posted two hits to help his own cause.

Noah Sall, Justin Genther and Schreur also added hits for Hamilton.

HAMILTON, Mich. — In two hard-fought, well-played baseball games, the freshman Hawkeyes came away with a split against the visiting Crusaders of Unity Christian.

Hamilton won the first game 6-5 before falling 8-2 in game two. The Hawkeyes are now 12-11-1 on the season.

“I thought we played great in many different areas tonight,” Hamilton coach Josh Hoppe said. “It was huge to come out in game one and get a win after Monday’s games against Byron Center. We played well in game two also, but Unity just played a little better.”

Tom Schreur earned the victory in game one. He pitched two innings before giving way to Ethan Buresh who went the rest of the way to grab the save.

Offensively, the Hawkeyes were led by hits from Schreur, Cole Carlson, Trenton Haverdink and Nick Lafleur.

Sean Thompson took the loss in game two despite pitching well. He scattered a few Unity runs before finally being tagged in the third inning.

Noah Sall broke up Unity’s no-hit bid with a single in the fourth inning. Also nabbing hits for the Hawkeyes were Thompson, Buresh, Brady Zomer and Justin Genther.

Hamilton will travel to Grand Haven for a tournament Saturday morning. They will take on Grand Rapids Christian in game one of the tournament at 10 a.m. The other side of the bracket sees host Grand Haven take on Tri-County.

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. — On a chilly spring afternoon, the Hawkeyes turned up the heat with their bats on the road against West Ottawa.

The freshman pounded out runs 8 runs in the top of the first inning in game two of the doubleheader en route to a 13-1 three-inning victory. In game one, Hamilton and West Ottawa played to a six-inning, 3-3 tie.

Coach Josh Hoppe’s team is now 11-6-1 on the season.

“I thought we played great tonight,” Hoppe said. “There have been times this season where I had to get on guys to do the little things — staying mentally focused and in the game, especially. We did that well tonight, and we did it against a very good team in West Ottawa.”

Ethan Buresh grabbed the no decision in the game one tie. He went five innings, yielded six hits, and fanned six.

Sean Thompson and Trenton Haverdink paced the Hawkeyes with two hits apiece.

Tom Schreur (4-1) nabbed the win in game two. He pitched all three innings and struck out five Panthers.

Nick Kronemeyer had two hits and three RBIs. Cameron Stoel and Jeff Dyke also added two hits each.

WYOMING, Mich. — The freshman once again played the role of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde against Wyoming Park Wednesday at Lamar Park.

Behind a strong offensive showing from much of the team, Hamilton defeated the Vikings 17-10 in game one, but the hot bats could not overcome a poor defensive showing during game two, a game in which the Hawkeyes lost 7-4.

“We hit the ball very well again tonight, and I’m glad to see that carry over from game-to-game,” Hamilton coach Josh Hoppe said. “But, we gave Wyoming Park far too many extra outs thanks to our errors in game two. That’s not us.”

Scott Arndt (2-0) picked up the win in game one. He pitched four innings and struck out six. Cameron Stoel and Nick Kronemeyer combined to finish out the game.

Sean Thompson (0-1) suffered the tough-luck loss in game two. Thompson pitched well, but the Hawkeyes committed several errors behind the left-hander.

Hamilton will face Wyoming Park again in the opening round of the Hamilton Tournament on Saturday. The two-round, single-elimination tournament will feature Zeeland East and Unity Christian on the other side of the bracket. The first games start at 10 a.m.

HOLLAND, Mich. — With Holland mounting a two-out comeback at the end of the first half of Monday’s doubleheader, Ethan Buresh quieted the Dutch rally with only two pitches.

His late-inning success carried over to the second game.

Buresh (2-2) no-hit Holland, allowing only three runners to reach base in Hamilton’s 16-0, four-inning mercy. The Hawkeyes pounded out 18 hits in support of their right-hander.

“We hit the ball the best we’ve had all year tonight, perhaps the best from any of the freshman teams I’ve coached,” Hamilton coach Josh Hoppe said after his team’s record moved to 9-5. “We’ve been telling our guys to be aggressive at the plate all season. Tonight that message really came through.

“Both our pitchers were great tonight, and it was awesome to see Ethan get a no-hitter. Hopefully the rest of the season plays out equally as well.”

Buresh, Justin Genther and Sean Thompson each collected three hits in game two.

Game one saw Tom Schreur (3-1) grab the 16-10 victory. He pitched 4.2 innings before being relieved by the bullpen.

Hamilton had 12 hits in game one. Trenton Haverdink had two hits, including a triple. Schreur, Cole Carlson and Noah Sall each added two hits of their own.

The Hawkeyes will travel to Wyoming Park on Wednesday for a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is schedule for 4:15 p.m.

GRANDVILLE, Mich. — Two wins got the freshmen Hawkeyes back on the winning track Wednesday.

After losing three of their last four games by a combined four runs, Hamilton responded by beating Calvin Christian 11-3 and 13-7.

The victories moved the freshman team’s record to 7-5.

“It was nice to get some wins to put us back on track,” Hamilton coach Josh Hoppe said. “We had some tough luck losses over our last few games, but our bats helped us out tonight.”

The Hawkeyes pushed across eight runs in the third inning to take control of the first game.

Tom Schreur earned the win. He pitched five solid innings to improve his record to 2-1.

Scott Arndt (2-0) earned the win in game two. He pitched three innings before giving way to Ethan Buresh.

Michael TenCate led the way offensively, going 3-for-3 with 4 RBIs.

The wins come after the Hawkeyes had dropped two to Unity Christian on Wednesday and split with Grand Rapids Christian Friday.

Nick Kronemeyer (2-1) picked up the team’s only win in the first game on Friday. He took the loss during the second game against Unity Monday.

Schreur took the loss in game two Friday. Buresh (1-2) took the loss in game one Wednesday.

Below are play-by-play summaries of the games:
