Freshman start season with sweep of Allegan
March 30, 2009
HAMILTON, Mich. — The freshman baseball team started their season Monday with two victories over the Tigers of Allegan. The Hawkeyes took the first game 9-0 and held on for a 3-2 victory in a close second game.
“I’m very, very happy to start the season out 2-0,” head coach Josh Hoppe said.
Brandon Dorn (1-0) earned the victory in the first game, scattering hits over four shutout innings while fanning five. Dorn also led the Hawkeyes at the plate by contributing two singles and a triple to his cause.
Colton Boerman (1-0) went the distance to earn the win in game two on the mound. In five strong innings of work he gave up only four hits, walked one, and struck out five.
Hoppe said there are things that his team still needs to improve upon.
“As usual for a first game, we had a few baserunning mistakes,” he said. “We missed a few signs, but we’re going to work on those things in practice.”
The freshman team will resume play following spring break. The West Ottawa Panthers will travel to Hamilton on April 14 to play a double header. First pitch of game one is scheduled at 4:15 p.m.
