Pair of wins over Calvin Christian cap six-game stretch

GRANDVILLE, Mich. — Two wins got the freshmen Hawkeyes back on the winning track Wednesday.

After losing three of their last four games by a combined four runs, Hamilton responded by beating Calvin Christian 11-3 and 13-7.

The victories moved the freshman team’s record to 7-5.

“It was nice to get some wins to put us back on track,” Hamilton coach Josh Hoppe said. “We had some tough luck losses over our last few games, but our bats helped us out tonight.”

The Hawkeyes pushed across eight runs in the third inning to take control of the first game.

Tom Schreur earned the win. He pitched five solid innings to improve his record to 2-1.

Scott Arndt (2-0) earned the win in game two. He pitched three innings before giving way to Ethan Buresh.

Michael TenCate led the way offensively, going 3-for-3 with 4 RBIs.

The wins come after the Hawkeyes had dropped two to Unity Christian on Wednesday and split with Grand Rapids Christian Friday.

Nick Kronemeyer (2-1) picked up the team’s only win in the first game on Friday.  He took the loss during the second game against Unity Monday.

Schreur took the loss in game two Friday. Buresh (1-2) took the loss in game one Wednesday.

Freshmen top Byron Center twice at home

HAMILTON, Mich. — The freshman Hawkeyes topped the visiting Bulldogs 7-5 and 7-6 behind two strong pitching performances and some timely hitting.

“It was great to come out and play like we did today,” Hamilton coach Josh Hoppe said after his team improved to 4-2. “Byron Center is a great team. We just hung tough and played as good as we have all year.”

Game one saw Ethan Buresh (1-1) dominate the Byron Center bats. The right hander stuck out six and walked five, while scattering three hits over 4.2 innings.

Tom Schreur (1) recorded the final out with the winning ran at first base to earn the save.

Buresh had a single and double and one RBI to help his own cause. Also adding hits for Hamilton were Schreur, Sean Thompson and Nick Kronemeyer.

Game two saw the Hawkeyes rally to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to grab the victory. Brady Zomer’s game-winning, two-out bloop single to right field scored Cameron Stoel, who slid safely in just ahead of the Byron Center tag.

The late inning heroics rewarded Scott Arndt (1-o) with his first win of the season. Arndt pitched a complete game and gave up only six hits.

Buresh had a hit and three RBIs. Thompson, Zomer and Mark Defouw accounted for the other Hamilton knocks.

“Both Ethan and Scott pitched very well,” Hoppe said. “It was nice to see that from them, as it was to see Brady Zomer’s first hit come in such a key situation. We’re hoping the success carries through the rest of the season.

Hamilton will return to action on Friday when the take on Grand Rapids Christian at the Gainey Athletic Complex. First pitched is slated for 4:30 p.m., unlike the usual time of 4:15 p.m.

Freshman team drops two against Zeeland East

ZEELAND, Mich. — The first road trip of the season was not kind to the freshman Hawkeyes.

The team dropped a pair of games to Zeeland East, losing 7-6 in game one and 16-7 in game two. The losses evened the team’s record at 2-2.

Justin Overhiser (0-1) took the loss in game one in relief of starter Tom Schreur, who went 3.1 innings.

Schreur had a double and Cole Carlson had two walks. Also getting hits for the freshmen were Sean Thompson, Ethan Buresh and Nick Kronemeyer.

Game two saw the Chix take advantage of Hamilton walks and errors. Buresh (0-1) took the loss, but pitched three strong innings.

Schreur momentarily gave Hamilton the lead with his two-run home run in the third inning. He also had a single.

Mark Defouw and Jeff Dyke added hits for the Hawkeyes in game two.
