Freshman coach to spend summer in baseball heaven

HAMILTON, Mich. — A member of the Hamilton baseball family is getting a chance to work at one of the sport’s most prestigious institutions.

Cody Eding, an assistant coach on Hamilton’s freshman team, will be spending the summer as an intern at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Eding, 21, attends Grand Valley State University in Allendale and is a 2007 graduate of Hamilton.

“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to spend the summer in Cooperstown,” he said. “It’s going to be a very cool experience, especially because I get to be around baseball every day.”

During his 10-week long internship, Eding will be working in the museum’s communications department. His duties will range from writing press releases on the Hall of Fame’s Web site to helping organize letters to potential donors. In addition, he will also help with the annual Hall of Fame baseball game and the 2010 induction weekend.

There were over 450 applicants for the 22 internships. Of the 22 internships, only two were in the communications department.

“It’s an honor to have been selected out of that many people,” he said. “I’m thankful for (freshman head coach Josh) Hoppe and the rest of the program for letting me coach over the last few years. I think my background in baseball played a huge role in my selection.”

Eding played baseball throughout his four years as a student at Hamilton. During his senior year in 2007, he was a team captain on the school’s first district championship-winning team in nearly 20 seasons.

In two season at the varsity level as a utility player, Eding totaled a .505 on-base percentage. He may be best remembered for being a ball magnet — he was hit by 10 pitches and once was hit by a pitch three times in a single game.

He is majoring in journalism at GVSU and has spent parts of the last two years covering various high school and college sports for The Holland Sentinel. Eding also recently accepted an offer to become the sports editor at GVSU’s student newspaper next fall.

Now in his third season as a freshman coach, Eding will be personally involved with baseball for nearly five straight months this year. The freshman team’s last game takes place only a few days before he leaves for Cooperstown.

“It’s going to be a quick turnaround,” he said. “Our last game is on a Wednesday, and I need to be in New York that weekend.

“That’s completely fine with me. Being around something I love makes the tight squeeze totally worth it.”

Freshman Hawkeyes start season with pair of wins over visiting Allegan

HAMILTON, Mich. — Wednesday’s freshman season opening doubleheader against Allegan quickly turned into a war of attrition, as both teams’ pitchers struggled to find the strike zone.

When the games finally ended, Hamilton prevailed to take 16-1 and 15-14 victories.

“It’s the first two games, and we have a lot of things to work on,” Hamilton coach Josh Hoppe said. “But, we are happy to come away with two wins to start the season.”

Nick Kronemeyer (1-0) grabbed the win in game one as the Hawkeyes ended the game in the fourth inning per the MHSAA mercy rule. In three innings of work, Kronemeyer allowed only two hits and one run while striking out four. He did have eight walks, four of which came in the first inning.

Several Hawkeyes had big games at the plate during game one.

Leadoff hitter Tommy Schreur put the first strike of the season to the fence for a double, and Hamilton never looked back. Schreur also had a triple and a walk, scored three runs, and drove in two RBIs.

Cole Carlson went 2-for-2 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Ethan Buresh went 2-for-3. Cameron Stoel went 1-for-1 with a two RBI double. Sean Thompson was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Trenton Haverdink was 1-for-1 with a sacrifice fly and three RBIs.

Game two went only two innings as daylight waned. Hamilton pitchers surrendered 11 walks, while Allegan pitchers added 13 of their own.

Schreur (1-0) picked up the win in relief.

The Hawkeyes pounded out five hits in game two, with Kronemeyer’s two RBI triple in the first inning highlighting the offensive attack.

The freshman team is off until after Spring Break. They will meet the Chix of Zeeland East on April 14 for a doubleheader in Zeeland. First pitch is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
