Calvin Christian downs Hawkeyes 14-5

HAMILTON, Mich. — A few big innings gave Calvin Christian the upper hand Thursday against Hamilton.

The Squires overcame a 5-1 second-inning lead by the Hawkeyes to win 14-5. Calvin Christian relied heavily on their pitching, as their starter threw a complete seven-inning game while throwing well over 100 pitches.

Daniel George (0-1) took the loss for Hamilton, who fell to 7-2 overall. Colton Boerman finished up in relief after George was chased from the game after three and one-third innings.

The Hawkeyes only had five hits.

“Calvin Christian’s pitcher turned in a great performance,” Hamilton coach Josh Hoppe said. “But we’re still improving. It was nice to see the guys play agressive defense tonight. We have to continue to do that.”

The Hawkeyes were without catcher Will Braschler, who missed the game with the flu.

The freshmen are next in action Saturday at their home tournament. They will face Wyoming Park in the opening round at the varsity field. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.

Hudsonville-Unity Christian will play Zeeland East on the JV field at the same time. The winners will play for the championship in the afternoon.

Hawkeyes split with Zeeland East

HAMILTON, Mich. — The freshman suffered their first loss of the season Wednesday, as they split a doubleheader against the Chix of Zeeland East. In two hard-fought, close games the freshman prevailed to win the first 4-3 but dropped the second 6-4 after a seventh inning rally fell short.

Hamilton’s record now stands a 7-1.

“It obviously stings a bit to lose our first game,” coach Josh Hoppe said. “But we once again didn’t quit battling. They just beat us in the second game.”

Chris Scholten earned the win in game one to improve his record to 2-0. He scattered three hits, walked two and struck out five over the course of his complete game performance.

Scholten was helped along by five Hawkeye hits. Daniel George’s second inning double plated two runs for Hamilton.

In game two, the Hamilton bats were held mostly silent by solid Zeeland pitching and defense. The Hawkeyes mustered only two hits in the loss.

Colton Boerman (2-1) took the loss.

The Hawkeyes played game two without outfielder Aaron Polet. Polet left game one after colliding with shortstop Brandon George on a foul pop-up behind third base. Play was stopped while medical personnel tended to Polet, who took the brunt of the collision.

Freshman drop Allendale 15-2, game two suspended

HAMILTON, Mich. — Freshman coach Josh Hoppe said he wanted to see more intensity from his freshmen after last week’s win against Holland.

His players responded in Monday’s game versus Allendale.

Down 2-0 before they had a chance at the plate, the Hawkeyes went on to tag the Falcons for 15 runs over the next five innings to grab a 15-2 victory and to improve their unbeaten record to 6-0.

“These guys weren’t satisfied with the way they played last game,” Hoppe said. “They came out last week Thursday and Friday and had probably our best two practices of the year. They came out today had a rough first inning, but they guys responded to adversity well. I couldn’t be more proud of the way we played the rest of the game.”

Brandon Dorn (3-0) went four strong innings to earn the win. He gave up two runs — both unearned — in the first inning, but settled down and held Allendale off the scoreboard the rest of the way. He struck out nine Falcon batters.

Hamilton batters combined for 12 hits. The Hawkeyes were paced by Dorn and centerfielder Daniel George. Each went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, and three runs.

Game two of the doubleheader was suspended due to rain before an inning could be completed.

The freshman are next in action Wednesday at home against Zeeland East. First pitch of game one of the doubleheader is set for 4:15 p.m. at the JV field.
