Freshman take one from Holland, game two postponed

HAMILTON, Mich. — After a slow start, the Hawkeyes held on to take a 13-5 victory from Holland Wednesday before the second half of the doubleheader was postponed due to a spectator emergency.

The freshman team improved their record to 5-0 with the win.

Hamilton was paced by hits from 10 different players. Lead off hitter Daniel George was 3-for-3 with a double, walk and two runs scored.

Colton Boerman (2-0) earned the win in relief for starter Brandon Dorn, who left the game with a shoulder injury after retiring the first three Dutch batters. Boerman surrendered only three hits in four innings while striking out four.

Despite the win, Hamilton coach Josh Hoppe said his team needs to pick up their intensity.

“Our mental approach, our discipline, all the way around need work,” he said

Game two was postponed after a spectator suffered a medical emergency following game one and was taken from the scene by ambulance. Hamilton High School principal Doug Braschler said the man was alert and responding to medical personnel.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” Hoppe said.

Freshman stay perfect, take two from Mona Shores

HAMILTON, Mich. — Behind strong pitching performances from starters Brandon Dorn and Chris Scholten, the freshman baseball team swept Mona Shores Thursday, winning 10-5 and 7-2.

Helped out by a solid defense that committed only two errors in the doubleheader, Dorn (2-0) and Scholten (1-0) both went the distance for Hamilton.

“We’re improving,” coach Josh Hoppe said. “We finished strong tonight, especially defensively. When we play the way we’re capable of playing this is the result we expect.”

Eight players recorded hits for Hamilton, who improved their record to 4-0.

The freshman face their first road test of the season with two games against Calvin Christian on Monday. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. at West Elementary School in Grandville.
