Pitching, clutch hitting propel Hawkeyes past Park 7-1

HAMILTON, Mich. – After scoring 40 runs in the first two games of the week, the Hawkeyes (14-2, 5-0) knew that things were not going to be that easy with a young and talented Park team coming in.  After jumping out to a first-inning lead, some late clutch hitting and the pitching of Carter DeBoe ran the Hawkeyes OK-Green record to 5-0.

“We got a win today,” Hamilton skipper Ken DeGood explained.  “Our league is too good.  We had some huge offensive games earlier this week but pitching ad timely hitting are the key to the league title.  I was encouraged that we didn’t play our best and still beat a talented team like Park.”

Senior Carter DeBoe (4-1) threw a complete game five-hitter for the hosts.  He allowed five hits while striking out 10 and walking only one.

“I thought Carter did a nice job getting out of a couple jams today,” DeGood added.  “After the game, you look at the book and he has 10 strikeouts.”

Offensively, the Hawkeyes were led by Jason Henrickson and Evan Mudd.  Both seniors had two hits and a double to pace the offensive attack.  Mudd’s double was of the two-run variety in the bottom of the fifth to give the hosts some breathing room.  Adam Koning also had a 2-RBI double while scoring two runs.  DeBoe added a sacrifice fly while Todd Scholten and R.J. Flowers each added a hit.

“Offensively, we got some clutch hitting when we needed it.  That’s a good sign as we head into a very difficult week in the league,” DeGood noted.

The Hawkeyes are next in action on Tuesday when they host the Maroons of Holland Christian at Hawkeye Field.  First pitch is slated for 4:15 p.m.

Hawkeyes continue hot streak in 19-4 win over West

ZEELAND, Mich. – In the two OK-Green conference games played at the Zeeland Baseball Complex on Wednesday, a total of 45 runs were scored. The Hawkeyes (13-2, 4-0) put up 19 of them as they improved their OK-Green record to 4-0 with a 19-4 win over the Dux. Once again, the offense was the story as the Hawkeye banged 17 hits to give starting pitcher Steve Durham all the support he would need.

“Hopefully we can keep the offense going,” coach Ken DeGood added.  “It seems like different guys every night and tonight it was the guys at the top of the order.”

The top four hitters in the Hamilton lineup all collected multi-hit games. Senior catcher Jason Henrickson was 4 for 4 with two doubles, 3 RBI and 4 runs scored. Shortstop Andrew DeGood was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI. Carter DeBoe added the only home run of the game as he collected five RBI for the visiting Hawkeyes. Adam Koning scored three times while going 2 for 3. R.J. Flowers added a double, a stolen base and 3 RBI on a perfect 1 for 1 day at the plate. Also adding hits for the Hawkeyes were Brandon Hulst, Luke Stafford, Cody Buresh, Evan Mudd and Chase Martin.

Durham, who upped his record to 2-0, went four innings. He gave up four runs on five hits with two walks. Junior Nate White came in and worked a one-two-three inning in the fifth.

“Steve didn’t walk anybody,” DeGood explained.  “The ball got up today but he’s been good for us and he’ll be key to our late season push.”

The Hawkeyes are next in OK-Green action on Friday as they host coach Shawn Veenstra and his Wyoming Park Vikings.    First pitch is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.

“I think Park is a real good hitting team.  We’re going to have to try to keep them down but we’re going to have to score.  They’re a very dangerous team,” DeGood said.

Hawkeyes clobber Rogers 21-0

HAMILTON, Mich. – The Hawkeyes (12-2, 3-0) wasted little time in putting runs on the board in the first home conference game of the 2010 season.  After a top of the first where Rogers had two runners thrown out on the bases, Hamilton plated eight runs in the bottom of the first.  That would give starting pitcher Evan Mudd all the run support he needed.  The Hawkeyes then plated 13 runs in the second inning.  The game was called after the top of the third due to the MHSAA 15-run mercy rule.

“We came out swinging the bats today,” Hawkeye skipper Ken DeGood noted.  “It was really a continuation of the end of last week for us.”

Mudd, who ran his record to 4-0 on the season, worked the first two innings.  He allowed two hits while striking out three and walking just one.  Junior Ben Baker came in and worked a hitless third inning in his varsity mound debut.

Offensively, the Hawkeyes collected 18 hits in the three-inning affair.  Senior Adam Koning was 3 for 3 with a double, 3 RBI and 2 stolen bases.  Going a perfect two for two on the day was Andrew DeGood, R.J. Flowers, Todd Scholten, Mudd and Steve Durham.  Each of those Hawkeyes had at least one RBI.  Nathaniel White, Brandon Hulst, Baker, Alex Tenckinck and Cody Buresh all collected one hit.

The Hawkeyes are next in action on Wednesday when they travel to Zeeland West.  Coach Jeff VanHuis’ Dux squad was defeated on Monday by Unity Christian 12-0.  First pitch is slated for 4:15 p.m.
