Hawkeyes defeat Unity Christian 4-1 in opener; second game suspended in 12th inning

HAMILTON, Mich. – Both the Hawkeyes and the Crusaders came into today’s OK-Green doubleheader thinking championship.  After the five hour day that saw more turns and twists than a North Carolina rural highway, the Hawkeyes walked away with one win and will have to wait to try to get the second one.  Game two was suspended after 11 innings with the score tied at 8.

“In game one they scored one in the first and we came back with two to set the tone,” Head Coach Ken DeGood noted.  “Carter just had another solid performance giving up only four hits.  I thought the first game we played pretty well against a pitcher that had been 4-0 on the season (Rietman).  Game two saw a lot of ups and downs.  We got down early and fought back to take the lead.  It was back and forth.  We did a nice job working out of some jams to keep the game tied.”

DeBoe was 2 for 3 with 2 doubles, two runs and a stolen base.  DeGood was 2 for 2 with 3 RBI and a stolen base.  Luke Stafford added one hit and run while Steve Durham contributed a triple in the opening game.
