GRAND HAVEN, Mich — The JV Hawkeyes traveled to Grand Haven Saturday to take part in the Grand Haven Invitational. Despite facing two opponents who both have an enrollment of roughly two-and-a-half times that of Hamilton High School, the Hawkeyes left no doubt as to who was the best team in the tournament.

Hamilton wasted no time getting on the board in game one as they pushed across four first inning runs against host Grand Haven. Keith Phillips was dominant on the mound, earning his third win by throwing six innings while allowing only three hits and striking out six Buccaneer batters. Cody Buresh led the Hawkeyes offensively with three hits in the game as Hamilton rolled to an 11-2 victory.

In the championship game against the Traverse City West Titans the Hawkeyes were even more dominant. Adam Schreur went the distance on the mound striking out 11 and allowing only two hits to record his fifth win of the season. Schreur, Buresh and RJ Flowers recorded two hits apiece for Hamilton as they cruised to a 9-2 victory and their third tournament championship of the season.

Saturday’s wins leave the team with a 20-5 overall record heading into Monday’s season finale against Kalamazoo Christian. First pitch is slated for 4:15.

HAMILTON, Mich. — The Hamilton JV baseball team swept a doubleheader Friday against Unity Christian guaranteeing themselves at least a share of the JV O-K Green Conference championship.

In game one Nathaniel White went the distance on the mound, while surrendering only four hits and striking out eight over seven innings to run his record to 5-0 on the season. Connor Hagen and Keith Phillips led the way, each collecting two hits for the Hawkeyes in the 11-2 victory.

Ben Baker (4-1) turned in another stellar performance in game two on the mound as he allowed only one hit in a complete game shutout victory over Unity Christian. Multi-hit games were enjoyed by both Cody Buresh and RJ Flowers as the Hawkeyes rolled to a 8-0 win.

The Hawkeyes end the conference season with a record of 12-2. Going into the final week of league play the Zeeland East Chix also had only two conference losses. The Hawkeyes are awaiting the results of the Chix final week of league play to determine whether they have won the league outright or are co-champions.

“I could not be more proud of this group of young men,” coach Brian Grabinski said. “The season started a little rough as we lost two of our first three games, but these young men decided that they would not settle for mediocrity. They decided that they were going to turn things around through hard work and sacrifice and that’s exactly what they did.”

HAMILTON, Mich. — The JV Hawkeyes emerged from a week of play that included six games in five days with five wins to go along with their second tournament championship of the season.

The week started with a 11-5 victory over Wyoming Park on Tuesday evening in Hamilton. The Hawkeyes then traveled to Allegan the following day and suffered a tough 5-4 defeat at the hands of the Tigers.

Fortunately the loss did not slow the Hawkeyes, who rebounded nicely on Friday with a pair of 15-3 and 15-0 victories over Zeeland West before capping the week by winning the Hamilton JV tournament on Saturday. Saturday’s victories included a 18-1 victory over Sparta in the first round before knocking off Wyoming Park for the second time in five days by a score of 13-3.

During the final two days of the week the Hawkeyes were dominant. In those four games they outscored their opponents 61-7, while allowing only nine hits and committing no errors in the field.

The JV Hawkeyes’ record now stands at 11-3 and 6-1 in the O-K Green. They hope to improve on that record on Tuesday when the Holland Christian Maroons come to town for a double header. First pitch is scheduled for 4:15.

HAMILTON, Mich — After giving up a two run lead in the seventh inning during their last encounter the JV Hawkeyes were looking to even the score with Zeeland East. Things did not look promising early on as the Chix jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings and extended the lead to 9-3 at the end of four.

“We made far to many mental mistakes early on,” Hamilton coach Brian Grabinski said. “We seemed to be just going through the motions with very little focus or intensity.”

Entering the seventh inning Zeeland East seemed to have the game in hand with a 9-4 lead. However, what followed will not soon be forgotten by any of the Hawkeyes involved.

After Keith Phillips singled to lead off the inning, Adam Schreur and RJ Flowers both followed with walks. The bases remained loaded after a Cody Buresh single drove in one run to make the score 9-5. Freshman Joey DeGood then emptied the bases with a dramatic grand slam to tie the score at 9-9.

The Hawkeyes went to work in the eighth after holding the Chix scoreless in their half of the seventh. Adam Schreur and RJ Flowers both singled after the first two Hawkeye batters were retired. This set the stage for Cody Buresh, who responded with a three-run, line drive home run over the left field fence to give Hamilton a 12-9 lead.

Despite the Chix being able to plate one run in the bottom of the eighth the Hawkeyes held on for a thrilling 12-10 victory. Keith Phillips picked up the win in relief, throwing four innings while surrendering one run on two hits and striking out eight Chix batters. Multi-hit games were enjoyed by Phillips, Flowers, Buresh, DeGood and Ben Baker. With the win the Hawkeyes ran their record to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the O-K Green.

“I could not be more proud of how we responded to adversity today,” Grabinski said. “We’ve really been focusing on that since the last time we played them and to see our boys continue to play hard and refuse to quit even when things seemed bleak was a great thing. However, what I’m most proud of is the exemplary sportsmanship and class that our kids continue to show on a daily basis.”

The JV Hawkeyes return to action on Tuesday when they host O-K Green rival Wyoming Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4:15.

HAMILTON, Mich. — The final roster for the 2009 Hamilton JV baseball team has been announced following tryouts that finished Tuesday.

Fifth-year coach Brian Grabinski will carry 14 players, including two freshman, into the season.

“We’ve got some pretty good talent,” Grabinski said. “We’ve got a lot of guys that I think all have potential to be contributors. We’ve got a lot of infielders. We’ve got about five or six infielders and four positions to put them between, so that’s a good problem to have.

“It’s nice to have enough talent that we are struggling to have room to fit them all in.”

Grabinski said the JV team will be competitive despite strong competition on their schedule.

“We’ve got a really tough schedule this year,” he said. “We’ve got our normal league games, which are going to include Unity and Holland Christian, and then we’ve also got a non-league game with Jenison and with Kalamazoo Christian who has a very tough program.

“They’re going to be challenged and that’s going to be good. I’m looking forward to it.”

The final JV roster can be seen by clicking on Rosters and then Junior Varsity in the sidebar.
