HAMILTON, Mich. — The Hawkeyes closed out the OK-Gold conference season the way they started it. In the season’s first conference game, sophomore Evan Mudd earned a win over a pesky South Christian team. In the finale against Wayland, Mudd again was splendid as he went the distance. Throwing a four-hitter, Mudd (3-3) struck out four Wildcats while also giving up four walks.
Leading the way again was senior Bryan Zoet. Zoet, besides a spectacular diving catch, was 3 for 3 with one RBI and a stolen base. Ryan Dannenberg, swinging a hot bat as of late, was two for three with a double and a triple. “D-berg” also had two RBIs. Tyler Hulst chipped in with a RBI single in the first inning. Jason Henrickson, Corey Schrotenboer and Carter DeBoe added hits for the Hawkeyes (16-8, 9-3).

The Hawkeyes close out the week at Wyoming Park on Friday. First pitch is slated for 4:15 p.m.

HAMILTON, Mich. — One of the hardest things to do in sports in enter the game off of the bench and perform. Players in the major leagues get paid millions of dollars for that ability. Today, senior pitcher Clark Becksford demonstrated that he too has the ability to do just that. Becksford, who relieved starting pitcher Jeffrey Dekker in the fifth, notched his fourth win and also had the game winning RBI in the top of the seventh.
To their credit, Wayland hit the ball all over the park. The difference was the fielding as Wayland made some crucial errors in the field to enable Hamilton to continue innings. Leading the way for the Hawkeyes was senior Bryan Zoet. He was 3 for 4 with a double and three RBI. Senior outfielder Ryan Dannenberg was 2 for 4 with a double to continue his hot streak. Junior second baseman Corey Schrotenboer also had two hits. Tyler Hulst had one hit and scored two runs.
Dekker started and went four innings while allowing ten hits. He gave up five runs (three of which were earned) while striking out five and walking none. Becksford (4-1) entered in the fifth. He went three strong innings yielding three hits and one run.
In the top of the seventh with the Hawkeyes clinging to a 6-5 lead, Becksford executed a perfect suicide squeeze to plate Hamilton’s seventh and final run. That run would turn out to be crucial as Wayland did score one run in the bottom of the seventh to bring the final score to 7-6. The win propels the Hawkeyes to a 15-8 overall record and an 8-3 record in the OK-Gold.

Hamilton will close out the 2008 conference season on Wednesday with a home game versus Wayland with first pitch scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
